About
Mansfield Entertainment
PROFESSIONAL THEATRE. RIGHT AT HOME.
Mansfield Entertainment Canada is a family-owned and operated business, providing professional entertainment to audiences across Ontario.
Joan Mansfield, the company's current Artistic & Managing Director, has been producing professional theatre since 1999, with her partner, and husband of nearly five decades, James. Recognizing the dearth of alternative commercial theatre, the Mansfields began producing in Toronto in 2002. In 2008, Joan was named Artistic Director of the Regent Young Peoples' Theatre at the then-newly reopened Regent Theatre in downtown Oshawa, and it was there she presented a youth production of Disney's Aladdin during the 2008 holiday season. The Regent Theatre later fell into the ownership of Ontario Tech University (then known as the University of Ontario Institute of Technology).
In 2013, Joan and James' son, Zac, encouraged them to relaunch as producers, and that Christmas was Zac's 1st Annual Reading of A Christmas Carol. It remains an annual tradition with proceeds being donated to a new charity every year. In 2014, the Mansfields began producing full season works, and the company was operating on the dedication of volunteers.
In 2017, the Mansfields, having built resources and the like, finally re-launched professional commercial theatre in downtown Oshawa with Mamma Mia!. That show brought thousands of visitors to downtown Oshawa during the month of July, and provided over 30 employment opportunities to Canadian artists, designers, production team members, technicians, and musicians. This annual summerstock season continues at the Regent Theatre every July, only being forced to miss two years, when the theatre sat dark during 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
In the fall of 2017, the Mansfields first produced their acclaimed production of the hit show Evil Dead: The Musical. It was further revived in 2019 (when it ran for 3 sold out months, becoming Oshawa's longest-running professional musical), and again, after many pandemic-related postponements and cancellations, in August of 2022 - when the Mansfields decided to close their production after five smash years in Oshawa. Never say never, though, as it should come as no surprise that the Mansfields will, indeed, revive the musical at some point in the future.
In March of 2018, the concert branch of Mansfield Entertainment was launched. These eclectic concerts are deeply grounded in the tradition of cabaret, and are curated and crafted in-house in a collaborative approach between producer, creator, and performer. Such shows include The Music of Broadway, The Music of the Night, 'Til I Hear You Sing. In addition to in-house created productions, the Mansfields are also concert promoters, having presented such hits as the global tour of Potted Potter (in association with Starvox Entertainment), Tony Award-nominee Louise Pitre in concert, iconic Canadian comedy music group The Arrogant Worms, and the incomparable Pavlo.
In 2018/2019, the touring branch of Mansfield Entertainment was launched, beginning with the annual Ontario tour of our in-house traditional panto, and the launch of the hugely successful The Music of the Night tour from 2019 thru 2021 (and believe it or not, we technically never missed a calendar year of touring during the times of the COVID-19 pandemic). The Music of the Night was re-worked by Zac Mansfield and re-launched as 'Til I Hear You Sing! which debuted at the Meridian Arts Centre in Toronto, in September of 2022, embarking on a tour that fall, with plans to continue touring through the rest of the 2020 decade.
Mansfield Entertainment (Joan Mansfield, Artistic and Managing Director | James Mansfield, Executive Producer) is proud to be a professional theatre, based out of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. We continue to provide high quality entertainment to audiences all over, and remain committed to providing employment opportunities to Canadians, and celebrating our own working professional artists. With the dedicated efforts of Zac Mansfield, Mansfield Entertainment became a living-wage employer beginning with the 2022/2023 season. Due to developments in his career outside of Durham Region, Zac concluded his time as Producer in February of 2023, and remains a production co-ordinator through the remainder of the announced season.
